Check your oil!
It's never been more important to check oil level regularly.
Extended service intervals, smaller capacity sumps, turbo chargers and the use of lower viscosity synthetic oils can all add up to higher oil usage.
With a smaller sump capacity, letting the oil level drop in a modern engine is more likely to increase engine wear - reduced volume means that oil will spend less 'recovery time' in the sump cooling down before circulating around the engine again. Hotter oil will breakdown and oxidise more rapidly.

Shock absorbers are used in conjunction with cushions and springs. An automobile shock absorber contains spring-loaded check valves and orifices to control the flow of oil through an internal piston.

External damage / corrosion / insecure mounting or negligible damping effect can all be reasons for an MOT failure

• increased risk of skidding in the wet
• aquaplaning occurs at lower speeds
• reduced efficiency of ABS braking system and ESP stability control system

• uneven/oscillating headlight level causing dazzle to on-coming drivers
• increased driver tiredness and reduced rate of response

• increased risk of 'snaking' when towing a caravan or trailer

Air conditioning doesn’t just provide in-car comfort during the hot summer months; it can also be used in winter to demist your windscreen. Air-con systems create dry warm air rather than the normal humid air from outside which can clear your windscreen much more quickly than your regular blowers. You may not be aware that over 10% of air-con gas permeates from the air-con system every year, which means that it may not work as well as it should. A drop in gas pressure will result in a loss of cooling efficiency as well as making your engine work harder (which, in turn, means more fuel). This is why car manufacturers recommend your air-con system is recharged with gas and lubricant every 2 years. This service is not part of routine vehicle servicing, so if your vehicle is more than 2 years old it’s probably due an air-con recharge.

In 2003, new European laws (Block Exemption Legislation) came into effect allowing independent garages to carry out servicing or repairs without invalidating a vehicle's warranty. They must be correctly inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure Tread depth must be above the legal minimum which for passenger cars is 1.6mm throughout a continuous band in the centre 3/4 of the tread and around the entire circumference. Diesel Particulate filters (DPF) or 'traps' do just that, they catch bits of soot in the exhaust. As with any filter they have to be emptied regularly to maintain performance. For a DPF this process is called 'regeneration' – the collected soot is burnt off at high temperature to leave only a tiny ash residue. Regeneration is either passive or active
Passive regeneration -- Passive regeneration takes place automatically on motorway or fast A-road runs when the exhaust temperature is high. Because many cars don't get this sort of use vehicle manufacturers have had to design-in 'active' regeneration where the engine management computer (ECU) takes control of the process.
Active regeneration -- When the soot loading in the filter reaches a set limit (about 45%) the vehicle's ECU will initiate post combustion fuel injection to increase the exhaust temperature and trigger regeneration. If the journey is too short while the regeneration is in progress, it may not complete and the warning light will come on to show that the filter is partially blocked. If you ignore the DPF warning light and keep driving in a relatively slow, stop/start pattern, soot loading will continue to build up until around 75% when you can expect to see other dashboard warning lights come on too. At this point driving at speed alone will not be enough and you will need to take the car to a dealer for 'forced' regeneration.
Forced regeneration -- If you have a problem with the DPF not regenerating, then the alternative may be a forced regeneration which is carried out using a diagnostic tool.
Above around 85% soot loading means that regeneration can no longer be performed on the vehicle and the DPF will need removing to be cleaned or replaced.
